Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has urged the House of Representatives and others to stop the smear campaigns targeting the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi.
In a statement issued by its Secretary General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the Igbo apex group deemed this appeal necessary following recent accusations made against Umahi.
Isiguzoro emphasized that Senator Umahi has not only initiated significant projects like the Lagos to Sokoto Super Highway and the Lagos to Calabar Coastal Road but has also shown a dedicated commitment to completing these projects with excellence.
He characterized the allegations made by Hon. Oseni as nothing more than slanderous and highly irresponsible.
Hon. Oseni had claimed that the Minister of Works has neglected the worsening state of roads nationwide, focusing solely on contract awards.
The statement articulated, “In a moment that requires clarity and civility, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the leading socio-cultural organization for the Igbo people, feels compelled to respond firmly to the recent allegations against Senator David Umahi, the Minister of Works, made by Hon. Oseni of the House of Representatives. It is essential to categorically state that these claims, which suggest that Senator Umahi has failed to address the deteriorating condition of roads in the country and is merely focused on awarding contracts, are utterly unfounded and irresponsible.”
Isiguzoro continued, “Hon. Oseni’s comments, which lack substantive evidence and sound reasoning, have raised serious concerns regarding fairness and truth. It is vital to point out that a proper investigation into Senator Umahi’s real-world initiatives as Minister has not only been neglected but also severely misrepresented.”
He noted the significant infrastructure challenges inherited from the previous administration, asserting that President Bola Tinubu is tasked with the daunting challenge of repairing the nation’s roads amid financial constraints. Under Senator Umahi’s leadership, meaningful progress has been made in improving road infrastructure, despite budgetary limitations.
