Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the prominent socio-cultural organization representing the Igbo people, has urged a comprehensive investigation into troubling reports of unauthorized payments and expenditures totaling N4.64 billion during the fiscal years 2020-2021.
These financial transactions are alleged to have transpired during the administration of Mr. Babatunde Fashola, the former Minister of Works and Housing.
Recent findings from the Office of the Auditor-General of the Federation have revealed significant irregularities in the financial activities overseen by Mr. Fashola during his time in office.
In a statement issued to the media on Thursday, November 21, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the Secretary-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, emphasized the importance of transparency, stating, “It is essential for him (Fashola) to address these allegations, as accountability is crucial in public service.”
He continued, “The Nigerian populace, particularly the Ndigbo, has a right to understand the serious implications of these allegations regarding the mismanagement of public funds.”
For clarity, Isiguzoro noted that during the relevant fiscal years, the current Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, served as the Governor of Ebonyi State from 2015 to 2023.
Ohanaeze Ndigbo firmly asserts, based on confirmed information and undeniable evidence, that Senator Umahi holds no responsibility for the unauthorized payments and expenditures of N4.64 billion that occurred during Mr. Fashola’s ministerial term.
“In our pursuit of justice and accountability, Ohanaeze Ndigbo has conducted a meticulous forensic examination of the claims regarding Mr. Fashola’s alleged misappropriation. Our findings definitively clear Senator Umahi of any wrongdoing,” the statement declared.
The organization condemned what it described as “efforts to link Senator Umahi’s commendable contributions as Minister of Works with the alleged financial misconduct of his predecessor.”
Furthermore, the group stated that these serious allegations “must not be dismissed or overlooked under any circumstances.”
“Public confidence hinges on transparent governance, making it imperative for the EFCC and ICPC to diligently fulfill their constitutional responsibilities in this matter,” they asserted.
Ohanaeze Ndigbo expressed its readiness to pursue all legal channels necessary to ensure these agencies conduct a thorough investigation into Mr. Fashola’s actions during his time as Minister.
“It is crucial for Senator Umahi to concentrate on his significant role in infrastructure advancement, particularly in the rehabilitation of federal roads, as he enjoys strong support from the Nigerian public,” the organization concluded.
