Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the foremost socio-cultural organization representing the Igbo community, has voiced its dissatisfaction regarding the apparent inaction of Southeast Governors in the face of a deteriorating security landscape in the region.
The organization criticized the governors for their inadequate efforts to communicate with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu concerning the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
In a statement released on Sunday, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the group’s Secretary-General, condemned the governors’ lack of urgency, which he believes has permitted individuals like Simon Ekpa, now living in Finland, to sway public opinion and hinder economic progress with his calls for lockdowns.
Ohanaeze Ndigbo urged the Southeast Governors to step up and assume their roles as primary security leaders in the region, advocating for creative and locally tailored strategies to tackle the pressing security issues facing Igbo land.
The organization also encouraged all Igbo people to reject the lockdown imposed by Simon Ekpa and to stand firm against any intimidation from criminal groups.
“As schools are set to reopen amidst current economic difficulties, it’s vital that we remain steadfast against any external threats to our stability,” the statement emphasized.
“Ohanaeze Ndigbo reaffirms its dedication to pursuing authentic solutions to our security dilemmas, calling on Southeast Governors to rise as true leaders.
“The moment for decisive action is here; we urge our leaders to reassert control over the Southeast and ensure the safety of our people from looming dangers,” the organization stressed.
Furthermore, the group reiterated its commitment to advocating for real solutions to the ongoing security issues and implored Southeast Governors to act swiftly to restore order and protect the Igbo community.
