Nigerian actress and filmmaker, Omoni Oboli, has opened up about how she once traded her scripts for acting roles during the early stages of her career.
She made this revelation during an interview, where she also shared the inspiration behind her decision to transition from acting to directing.
Omoni explained that after watching films based on her scripts, she realized that her creative vision wasn’t being fully captured, which motivated her to leap into directing.
“I was trading my scripts for movie roles. I’d say, you know what, don’t pay me, just give me a role in the film,” she recalled.
However, the actress noted that when she watched the final products, they often didn’t match the vivid pictures she had in mind while writing.

“So I said to myself, if my stories are going to have my DNA, then I’m going to have to direct them myself,” she explained.
Admitting it was a daunting decision, Omoni added, “It was a scary thought, but then I said to myself, Warri no dey carry last. Wetin’ dem get wey I no get? I was like, I will do this thing.”
Determined to bring her vision to life, she began closely observing directors on set and eventually enrolled in a short course at the New York Film Academy to sharpen her skills.
