The Ondo State Government remains steadfast in its commitment to protect the rights and interests of its citizens, following a recent court ruling declaring the creation of the 33 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) as unconstitutional and illegal. The Ondo State High Court in Akure deemed the establishment of the LCDAs by the late Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu to be unlawful.
In response to the court’s decision, the government issued a statement affirming its determination to employ all necessary measures within the framework of the law to ensure the well-being of its citizens, promote peaceful coexistence, and uphold the principles of justice. Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, the Honourable Attorney General of Ondo State, has taken note of the judgment and has requested a Certified True Copy (CTC) for a thorough review and analysis. Based on this, a comprehensive legal opinion will be provided to the government. The government reiterates its commitment to prioritize the welfare of its citizens, working tirelessly to ensure that justice is served and the rule of law is upheld.
It emphasizes the importance of fostering peaceful coexistence among the people of Ondo State and protecting their rights. The establishment of the LCDAs was made into law in September 2023, following its passage by the State House of Assembly members.
These new entities coexist with the existing 18 Local Government Areas (LGAs), increasing the total number to 51.
Late Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, a distinguished Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), and ex-Attorney General of Ondo State, served as the governor from February 24, 2017, until his unfortunate passing on December 27, 2023.
In line with constitutional provisions, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, the deputy governor, was immediately sworn in as the new governor, continuing the administration’s commitment to serving the people of Ondo State.
