The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed that one person lost their life, and eight others were rescued following a collision on the Third Mainland Bridge on Monday.
Taofiq Adebayo, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment at LASTMA, disclosed the details in a statement.
According to Adebayo, the fatal accident involved two Mazda commercial buses with registration numbers LND 624 YE and EKY 804 YH. The buses collided head-on near Ilaje, while en route to Iyana-Oworonsoki, resulting in one death and severe injuries to eight passengers.
“The tragic accident occurred after both buses engaged in reckless speeding, racing from Adeniji Adele, leading to this unfortunate incident,” Adebayo said.
LASTMA officers quickly intervened, rescuing the eight injured passengers who sustained serious fractures. They were immediately taken to Gbagada General Hospital for treatment by the Lagos State Ambulance Services.
The statement also mentioned that police officers from Bariga and Alonge stations provided security during the rescue operation to maintain order at the scene.
“LASTMA remains committed to promoting road safety and urges all drivers to adhere to speed limits and drive cautiously,” Adebayo added, extending condolences to the bereaved family and wishing the injured a swift recovery.
In a separate incident earlier in the day, Adebayo reported another accident involving a Honda CRV (AKD 743 HV), which overturned near the University of Lagos waterfront on the Third Mainland Bridge. Fortunately, there were no casualties.
The crash was attributed to excessive speeding, and LASTMA personnel promptly cleared the scene to avoid further traffic disruption.
