A political shift occurred in the Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area of Kano State, where more than 1,331 members of the All Progressive Congress (APC) defected to the ruling New Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP).
These defectors, primarily hailing from 11 wards in the region, pledged to actively oppose the APC’s return to power in Kano State. Among the notable figures leaving the APC were Malam Kwa, the former Vice Chairman of the local government, and Hon. Audu Tumfafi, a former aspirant for the state House of Assembly.
During a welcoming event for the new members in Dawakin-Tofa, Hashimu Dungurawa, the State Chairman of NNPP, praised their decision to join the party. He emphasized that under the guidance of Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, NNPP is dedicated to advancing the socio-economic and infrastructural growth of Kano State.
Dungurawa assured the defectors of fair opportunities within the party and dismissed rumours suggesting a mass exodus of NNPP members to the APC. He affirmed that NNPP maintains a stronghold over its organizational structure throughout the state.
“We are aware that one APC individual has been attempting to attract our members into their party. However, upon reviewing our membership records, we have not detected any decline in our numbers,” Dungurawa stated.
He also cautioned against individuals seeking to exploit the situation for financial gain, advising members to be wary of unscrupulous characters.
Earlier, Malam Kwa criticized former governor Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, claiming that he failed to foster development in the area during his eight-year tenure. Kwa further asserted that Ganduje’s poor management of the party contributed to his inability to secure a House of Representatives seat in the 2023 general elections.
