The Oyo State chapter of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has announced the suspension of its indefinite strike, which lasted nine weeks.
This decision was formalized in a letter dated July 23, 2024, signed by Mr. Aina Emmanuel, the NANNM Oyo State Secretary, and Mr. Adeyemi Samuel, the Chairman. The letter was addressed to the Chairman of the Hospitals Management Board, Oyo State.
According to the letter, the suspension is effective for one month to allow the state government time to address the union’s demands. Nurses and midwives across the state have been instructed to return to their posts starting Wednesday, July 24, 2024.
The correspondence, titled “Suspension of Indefinite Strike,” stated: “We write to inform you that, in response to the state government’s commitment to address our demands, the NANNM Oyo State Council has decided to suspend our indefinite strike for one month. This suspension will enable the implementation of the remaining approved requests.
“All members are to resume their duties from Wednesday, July 24, 2024. We trust that the government will continue to make progress on our demands. We appreciate your efforts thus far and extend our highest regards.”
The strike, which began on May 22, was aimed at addressing several issues, including the mass recruitment of nurses and midwives into various health institutions, correcting erroneous promotional letter dates, and implementing a 25 percent CONMESS adjustment circular for nurses and midwives working with the Oyo State Government. The union also sought financial compensation for promotions from 2018 to 2022 at LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso.
Other demands included the payment of withheld January/February 2011 salaries, uniform allowances for all nurses and midwives, enhanced hazard allowances, and the adoption of career progression for nurses and midwives with degrees.
