The Oyo State Government has announced that it will begin distributing appointment letters to 5,600 newly recruited basic school teachers on Monday, January 6, 2025. The distribution will occur at the Local Government Universal Basic Education Authorities (LGUBEA) across all local government areas in Oyo State.

This announcement was made today by Dr. Nureni Aderemi Adeniran, Chairman of the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board, during a meeting with Education Secretaries in Ibadan. Dr. Adeniran emphasized the importance of innovation and modern teaching techniques, encouraging the new teachers to embrace these approaches in their classrooms.

He reiterated the Board’s zero tolerance for examination malpractices and confirmed that the new teachers’ appointments would take effect from January 1, 2025. However, he also noted that there are discrepancies in staffing across the state, with 12 local governments having an excess of teachers while others are understaffed. A redistribution of staff will be carried out to ensure fairness and equity.

Dr. Adeniran urged the newly recruited teachers to exhibit high levels of patriotism, integrity, and professionalism. “As young teachers, you are expected to be creative, adaptive, talented, and progressive. We urge you to be innovative. I therefore encourage you to be the teachers of this age and the game-changing educators for the future,” he said. “You will be expected to contribute to our vision of revolutionizing the basic education sub-sector,” he added.

He further explained that the recruitment process was part of ongoing efforts to improve basic education in Oyo State, aligning with Governor Seyi Makinde’s campaign promises, particularly for rural areas that have experienced teacher shortages due to retirements and other challenges.

“The first batch of 5,600 newly recruited teachers, out of 7,000 who successfully passed the rigorous recruitment process, will receive their appointment letters starting Monday,” Dr. Adeniran confirmed.

He also highlighted that the Seyi Makinde administration has allocated N2.5 billion as counterpart funding for the 2022 and 2023 UBEC/SUBEB intervention projects, ensuring continued infrastructure development in basic and junior secondary schools.

Dr. Adeniran congratulated the new teachers and urged them to adhere to the highest professional standards, following the code of conduct for teachers. He also praised Governor Makinde for approving the appointments, noting that his intervention has positioned Oyo State as a leader among its peers.
