The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned the recent food stampedes occurring across the country, labeling them as a “disturbing reflection of the extreme levels of misery, poverty, hunger, starvation, hopelessness, and desperation that currently afflict our nation under the inept, corrupt, and directionless leadership of the Tinubu-led All Progressives Congress (APC) government.”
This statement was released on Sunday by Debo Ologunagba, the National Publicity Secretary of the main opposition party.
The PDP expressed sorrow over the tragic incidents in Oyo and Anambra States, as well as in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, which resulted in the deaths of many vulnerable individuals, including children, during their desperate quest for food due to the widespread hunger exacerbated by the APC’s detrimental policies.
The party lamented that the APC administration has allegedly devastated the once-flourishing economy, pushing millions of Nigerians further into severe poverty and hunger. Many citizens, unable to afford basic meals, have resorted to drastic actions, including suicide, seeking slavery abroad, and competing for mere scraps to survive.
The statement emphasized, “It is tragic that, despite our nation’s abundant resources, Nigerians are forced to endure a harrowing existence where they perish in the fight for food.”
The PDP further criticized the APC as a party of “political vampires and buccaneers,” accusing them of lacking any regard for human life and taking pleasure in the suffering and deaths of citizens, including innocent children.
“This is evident in the APC administration’s persistent claims of false performance and empty assurances of food security while willfully neglecting the necessary investments to enhance the productive sectors, especially agriculture and food production,” the statement read.
Additionally, the PDP pointed out the APC’s dismissal of all recommendations from the PDP and other concerned Nigerians to reconsider the hasty implementation of burdensome policies, such as the abrupt increase in fuel prices and the floating of the Naira, both of which have devastating effects on the productive sector and the lives of citizens.
The party criticized the APC leaders for prioritizing personal enrichment over the welfare of the people, engaging in widespread corruption through direct looting of government funds, budget manipulation, contract inflation, oil subsidy fraud, and fictitious programs that yield no real benefit to the populace.
The PDP urged the Nigerian people to hold the Tinubu-led APC government accountable for the underlying causes of these tragic events and to demand justice.
