The Abia State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has formally requested that Governor Alex Otti provide evidence supporting his claims of having disbursed N90 billion to settle alleged contract debts in the state. The party contends that it was previously unaware of any such debt.
The PDP has raised concerns about the lack of verifiable documentation and adherence to proper procedures in Otti’s assertions.
In a letter addressed to the governor, penned by the party’s new state chairman, Elder Abraham Amah, and titled “Open Letter to Governor Alex Otti,” dated November 8, 2024, the PDP expressed their concerns: “We have been alerted to your recent statements regarding the payment of N90 billion to contractors, which you claim are debts from the previous PDP administration.”
The letter clarified, “The Abia PDP does not know any such debt incurred by the past administration. It would greatly benefit the people of Abia if you could provide the necessary records to substantiate your claims.”
The party expressed serious apprehension over the assertion that a sum of this magnitude could be distributed to address debts that, based on their understanding, lack proper documentation and due process. They stated, “This considerable amount demands urgent examination, and we urge you to clarify how this figure was established and the rationale behind these payments.”
Highlighting the need for transparency and accountability, the PDP insisted that the governor disclose the identities of individuals and companies that have profited from these financial transactions. “The residents of Abia State deserve to know who received these payments, as it will help build public trust in your administration and its financial operations,” they stressed.
Additionally, the PDP raised alarms regarding the implications of these payments, suggesting that Governor Otti’s administration may be unduly benefiting Signature Bank with the additional N90 billion. “You must assure the public of the integrity and legitimacy of these transactions. The confidence of our people in their leaders is essential, and without transparent communication, that trust is at risk,” they pointed out.
Lastly, the PDP expressed discontent over the apparent inconsistency between the governor’s previous assurances regarding financial management and the current situation.
They called on him to take swift action to clarify these issues, reinforcing the commitment to transparency that is crucial for effective governance.
