The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has refused to sign the peace accord for the upcoming Edo State governorship election, scheduled for September 21.

This was revealed by former Head of State, Abdulsalami Abubakar, on Thursday during the peace accord signing ceremony in Benin City.

According to Abubakar, the PDP has set certain conditions that must be met before the party agrees to sign the accord.

“I met with the governor yesterday, and he informed me that the PDP would not be signing the peace accord,” Abubakar stated. “They have raised some concerns and were expected to present those through the party chairman. However, after waiting for him, they communicated that they would not be signing the accord until their conditions were addressed.”

The specific conditions set by the PDP were not disclosed, and the party’s state chairman was absent from the event to provide further clarification.

Governor Godwin Obaseki had hinted on Wednesday that the PDP might not participate in the peace accord signing. He made this statement during a meeting with members of the National Peace Committee, signalling the party’s hesitance.

While the PDP and its candidate, Mr Asue Ighodalo, withheld their signatures, other major political parties, including the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its candidate, Mr Monday Okpebholo, as well as the Labour Party’s candidate, Olumide Akpata, endorsed the peace agreement.
