The Forum of Governors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged the Federal Government to guarantee a fair and swift judicial process for those arrested during the #EndBadGovernance protests.

This appeal was made in a statement delivered by the Forum’s Chairman, Bala Mohammed, who also serves as the Governor of Bauchi State, following a meeting held at the Taraba State Government House in Jalingo.

The governors emphasized the fundamental right of citizens to engage in peaceful demonstrations and extended their condolences to the families of protesters who lost their lives during the nationwide rallies that took place from August 1 to August 10.

“The meeting focused on significant intra-party issues and governance challenges that affect our states, as well as matters of national importance,” the statement revealed.

The governors expressed relief at the conclusion of the #EndBadGovernance protests, which were on the verge of escalating into a national crisis.

“We commend the adeptness of our governors, particularly those from the PDP, who managed the situation in their states with poise, preventing miscreants from exploiting the protests,” the statement continued.

“The Forum reaffirms that peaceful protests are an inherent right of the citizens, allowing them to express their legitimate grievances. We express our sorrow for the innocent lives lost and call on the Federal Government to ensure a swift and equitable trial for those detained.”

In addition, the governors addressed the ongoing turmoil within the PDP in Rivers State, reiterating their support for Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

They called for a reevaluation of the party congress results to restore his leadership position, pledging to collaborate with the party’s National Working Committee (NWC).

“The Forum recognizes the political stalemate in Rivers State, where court rulings are being used to dictate the outcomes of party congresses. We stand firmly with Governor Fubara and will engage with the NWC to reassess the congress results, aiming to rectify the situation and allow him to reclaim his rightful leadership role in the party.”

Furthermore, the governors expressed disappointment that instead of reviewing macroeconomic and social policies to better serve the populace, the Federal Government has resorted to blame tactics. They called on the President to demonstrate statesmanship and to prevent his officials from making disparaging remarks that undermine the efforts of sub-national governments.

“We remain steadfast in our commitment to support the suffering Nigerian populace and will take all legitimate measures to alleviate their hardships,” Mohammed declared.
