The upcoming council elections in Adamawa State have sparked a progressive initiative by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). In a bid to foster gender inclusivity and fairness, the PDP in Adamawa State has proposed the pairing of men and women for the positions of chairman and vice chairman in every local government area.
Scheduled for next month, the council elections will witness active participation from all willing political parties in the state, with candidates vying for the positions of chairman, vice chairman, and councillors.
Addressing the press in Yola, Tahir Shehu, the state Chairman of PDP, unveiled the party’s groundbreaking strategy.
He announced that male chairmanship candidates from the PDP will be required to nominate female running mates, while female candidates aspiring for the chairperson position will choose male counterparts to run alongside them.
The PDP’s commitment to gender equality is evident in their recognition and celebration of women’s leadership. This is exemplified by the current state deputy governor, Professor Kaletapwa Farauta, who is a woman.
Shehu emphasized the party’s belief in the unwavering honesty and dedication demonstrated by women. Acknowledging the significant influence of women voters in elections, the PDP chairman stressed the importance of appreciating and empowering women in positions of leadership.
With a firm commitment to promoting gender balance, the PDP in Adamawa State aims to ensure that all local government areas won by the party will have a diverse representation of men and women in the positions of chairman and vice chairman.
“We have a wealth of capable women in our midst, and as a party, we have every reason to encourage their participation in leadership roles,” Shehu declared.
The PDP is determined to collaborate with candidates to facilitate the implementation of this visionary gender pairing approach.
