The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has voiced apprehension regarding the potential for Nigeria to devolve into a one-party state, as the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) appears to be gradually gaining control over more states in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections.
This concern made known during a visit to the PDP office in Akwa Ibom State by Governor Umo Eno, who was there to express gratitude to party executives, supporters, and stakeholders.
Speaking on behalf of the National Working Committee (NWC), the National Woman Leader of the PDP, Hajiya Amina Darosimi, acknowledged the progress made under Governor Eno’s leadership, commending the achievements of his administration over the past 19 months. She emphasized the significant efforts made in developing the state, stating, “The party takes pride in the governor’s remarkable accomplishments.”
Darosimi reaffirmed the PDP’s commitment to opposing any attempts to establish a one-party system in Nigeria, asserting that the PDP serves as a vital opposition force in the country. She also pledged the party’s support to ensure that Governor Eno secures a second term to further elevate the party’s standing.
In his remarks, Governor Eno expressed his appreciation for the party’s unwavering support across its different structures since his inauguration on May 29, 2023. He explained that his visit was part of the long-standing tradition for leaders who have emerged from the party, emphasizing that returning to the party’s office felt like coming home, given that the party is the foundation of his government.
