The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has made a bold announcement regarding its intention to dispute the results of the recent governorship election in Edo State, citing significant irregularities and an electoral process that it deems compromised.
In an interview on Sunday, Debo Ologunagba, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, reaffirmed the PDP’s dedication to the rule of law, indicating that the party is currently analyzing the election documentation in preparation for legal proceedings.
“As a party that values law and order, we have faith in the legal system and do not resort to self-help, unlike the APC. They have undermined our electoral institutions, including INEC and the police. However, we are confident that the voice of the people will ultimately be heard,” Ologunagba asserted.
He elaborated that the PDP’s legal experts and officials are diligently scrutinizing the election outcomes, assuring that the party’s stance will soon be made public and will influence their forthcoming legal actions.
“Our team is currently analyzing the results, and within the next few days, we will disclose the PDP’s position, which will be evident in the actions we undertake,” he stated.
Ologunagba also voiced his apprehension about the integrity of Nigeria’s democratic institutions, particularly criticizing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for its perceived lack of independence.
“For democracy to flourish, Nigeria requires robust, independent institutions. Unfortunately, INEC has tarnished its reputation by failing to adhere to its own regulations. The challenges we face in our democracy stem from the fragility of our institutions,” he commented.
Despite the setbacks, the PDP remains resolute in its commitment to pursuing justice through legal avenues, trusting that the principles of law will ultimately triumph.
The party asserts that its candidate, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, emerged victorious based on polling unit results across Edo State. Ologunagba emphasized that the PDP has compiled substantial evidence to back its claims and is determined to seek justice through legitimate means.
“With all the results from the polling units in our possession, it is evident that we won this election. We are confident in the legal process and will take the necessary steps to ensure that democracy is upheld,” he reiterated.
The PDP is now set to officially file its legal challenge in the coming days, aiming to overturn the election results and claim what it describes as “the authentic will of the people” in Edo State.
