The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called upon the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, to intervene and put an end to the purported harassment of its members and innocent citizens in Edo State by the All Progressives Congress (APC).

During a press conference on Monday, PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, expressed concerns that the APC has been allegedly detaining leaders and supporters of the opposition party.

Ologunagba accused the ruling party of allegedly collaborating with certain security personnel, claiming that their objective is to instil fear among the populace ahead of the gubernatorial elections scheduled for September 21.

He stated, “The PDP once again urges the Inspector General of Police to step in and put a stop to the actions of the APC, which are currently sowing discord between the people of Edo State and the police. The IGP must guarantee the immediate and unconditional release of every citizen of Edo being held by the APC.”

“The IGP has a responsibility to the people of Edo State and the nation at large to maintain peace and uphold democracy by addressing this matter before it spirals out of control. This is essential for alleviating the tension in Edo State and ensuring that the upcoming elections are free, fair, transparent, and credible.”

Ologunagba further remarked, “The citizens of Edo State have reached their limit with the APC and will utilize every lawful means available in a democratic society to defend themselves, including directly confronting and resisting the APC’s desperate attempts to undermine the September 21, 2024, gubernatorial election.”

“The PDP, as a law-abiding party committed to the interests of the people, will not passively observe while the APC intimidates the residents of Edo State.”

“Our party will, within the framework of the law, take every necessary measure to contest the APC vigorously in all aspects, to safeguard our democracy and ensure that the voice of the people of Edo State is not compromised in this election.”

“The PDP stands united with the people of Edo State in their determination to protect their state and democracy. Anyone, regardless of their status, who seeks to undermine the will of the Edo State populace in this election will certainly face repercussions.”
