As the Edo State Governorship election approaches in just a week, the national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has pledged to safeguard the votes of its candidate, even stating they would go to extreme lengths to prevent any form of election rigging by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

During the party’s grand finale campaign rally in Benin City, the acting national chairman, Ambassador Umar Damagun, issued a stern warning to INEC about the consequences of announcing election results at midnight, asserting that the party would fiercely defend its votes.

Damagun emphasized, “We are making it clear that we do not want results to be announced in the dead of night. We will remain vigilant and ensure that this does not occur. We are serious about defending our votes—this is not just a threat; we are prepared to protect our rights with everything we have.”

He also urged security forces to maintain neutrality and provide a fair environment for all political parties during the elections. Damagun made it clear that if security agencies were to act in favor of any political party, they would face significant repercussions. “You are funded by taxpayers, and you must uphold the values of your position. Protect the citizens and ensure justice prevails,” he stated.

In a powerful declaration, he asserted, “If you choose to support a particular party, then you must be prepared to confront us. We are ready to stand firm for our rights, and while you may have weapons, we have faith.”

Damagun called on citizens to take the upcoming governorship election seriously, framing it as a critical test for Nigeria’s democracy. He warned that any failure by INEC to conduct a transparent and fair election could result in chaos.

Additionally, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, the Chairman of the National Campaign Council for the Edo 2024 Governorship Election, stressed the importance of preserving the integrity of the electoral process and affirmed that the party would not be intimidated or allow rigging against their candidate, Barrister Asue Ighodalo.

Fintiri, who praised Edo as a center of civilization and intellect, encouraged voters to turn out in large numbers to support the PDP’s candidate.

In his speech after receiving the party’s flag, Asue Ighodalo committed to building upon the successes of outgoing Governor Obaseki if elected.

He acknowledged the challenges faced by PDP governors in securing their positions, asserting, “Our governors fight hard to win their elections, and we will face the same challenges in this battle.”
