The issues within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) shows no sign of being resolved, as the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) expressed strong concerns regarding leadership disputes during an emergency meeting on Thursday.

After a four-hour deliberation at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja, the BoT urged leaders from the North Central Zone to promptly organize a meeting among regional stakeholders to nominate a successor for former National Chairman, Senator Iyorchia Ayu.

Since Ayu’s dismissal, Amb. Umar Damagum has assumed the role in an acting capacity and has even initiated legal proceedings to contest his removal.

In a statement delivered by BoT Chairman, Sen. Adolphus Wabara, the board emphasized the necessity for the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) to demonstrate effective leadership by honoring its commitments and organizing the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting as planned for February 2025.

The BoT’s communiqué stated, “The NWC must exhibit leadership, fulfill its promises, and convene the NEC meeting as scheduled in February 2025. This is essential for addressing urgent matters and establishing a clear direction for the party. Any further delays could worsen current difficulties and potentially jeopardize our Party’s future.”

Additionally, the BoT reiterated the need for unity and adherence to democratic principles among all party organs to reinforce the PDP’s position as a credible opposition force in Nigeria.

“The strength of the PDP is rooted in our collective determination rather than individual ambitions,” they stressed. “The BoT cannot allow personal interests or conflicts to overshadow our shared goal of fostering a better Nigeria. Thus, we remain dedicated to pursuing genuine reconciliation, unity, and harmony within the Party.”
