The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is currently holding a crucial meeting at the party’s headquarters in Abuja.
This session aims to tackle the contentious issue surrounding the Rivers State Congress, along with similar challenges faced by other state chapters within the party.
Commencing at 3 p.m., the meeting sees the participation of prominent party figures, including Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum, National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu, National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba, and National Organizing Secretary Umar Bature, among various other officials.
An insider from the NWC, who preferred to remain unnamed, disclosed that the agenda includes a comprehensive review of all concerns tied to the congresses, particularly those in Rivers and other states experiencing difficulties.
“This marks our first gathering since the ward and state congresses. The NWC will thoroughly evaluate all matters concerning the congresses, especially those in Rivers and other problematic states,” the source stated.
This meeting follows a three-week hiatus during which tensions within the party have been escalating.
The Rivers State congresses have become a flashpoint for conflict, notably between Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and former governor of Rivers State, and the PDP Governors Forum, which has openly endorsed the current Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
The political discord intensified on August 24, when the PDP governors called for an examination of the Rivers congresses and supported Fubara’s leadership within the party in the state.
Wike’s ire was evident when, on August 31, he issued a warning, threatening to stir unrest in the states governed by the PDP if they continued to meddle in Rivers’ affairs.
In a counteraction, the PDP Governors’ Forum publicly denounced Wike’s threats as irresponsible on September 3.
