Peter Obi, the former Governor of Anambra State and the Labour Party’s candidate in the 2023 presidential election, has released a statement responding to the varied reactions following his public congratulations to former military leader General Yakubu Gowon on his 90th birthday.

Acknowledging the mixed feelings among Nigerians—particularly those impacted by the civil war—Obi emphasized the vital role of forgiveness and national reconciliation in moving forward.

He conveyed that his gesture was intended to embody a renewed spirit of unity for the nation, one that transcends bitterness and animosity.

Citing Christian principles, Obi highlighted how forgiveness can heal deep-seated wounds and reaffirmed his dedication to creating a new Nigeria, where ethnic, religious, and regional divisions no longer obstruct progress.

He argued that clinging to resentment only serves to maintain division and is detrimental to the nation’s future.

Additionally, Obi encouraged his supporters, many of whom were born after the Civil War, to concentrate on building a brighter future rather than getting mired in the conflicts of the past.

In part of his statement, he remarked, “While my reasons for joining fellow Nigerians in celebrating General Gowon may not resonate with everyone, particularly those directly affected by the war, it’s crucial to recognize that anger, pain, and bitterness are common reactions to suffering.”

He continued, “Such sentiments fuel sectarianism and lead to unnecessary conflict, not only in our country but globally. Forgiveness is transformative; it liberates the one who forgives. It is a journey rather than a mere reaction. Hatred has held back our society, which is blessed with immense potential, but this cycle of hate must end.”
