Mr. Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate for the 2023 elections, has emphasized the importance of transparency in the Federal Government’s upcoming tax reform initiatives.
In a statement made on Tuesday through his X account, Obi acknowledged that while tax reforms are necessary, it is crucial that the general public is involved in the process and that the government does not solely reap the benefits.
“Tax reform is an important matter, and there is nothing inherently wrong with pursuing it. However, these reforms must undergo thorough public discourse,” he stated.
He stressed the need for public hearings on tax reform, which would enable Nigerians from different backgrounds to participate actively in the conversation. “This approach fosters public trust and ensures that policymaking is inclusive,” he added.
Obi pointed out that issues of this significance require comprehensive discussions and thoughtful analysis, stating that they should not be hurried. “Public hearings are vital to gathering diverse perspectives and opinions,” he insisted.
He further noted that when contemplating tax reforms, the focus should not only be on how the government benefits, particularly in terms of increasing revenue, but also on the broader implications for the nation and the sustainability of its various sectors.
“Moreover, it is essential for the government to educate the public and gain their support for any policy changes. Trust and legitimacy are fundamental to effective governance; without these, well-intended reforms may falter,” Obi warned.
“Let us emphasize transparency, robust discussions, and public involvement as we navigate forward. This is how we can cultivate a genuinely participatory democracy, paving the way for a new Nigeria,” he concluded.
