Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate for the Labour Party (LP) in 2023, expressed concerns on Monday that democracy in Nigeria is deteriorating and has increasingly become a form of transitional politics.
Speaking at a rally in Akure, Ondo State, to support the party’s governorship candidate ahead of the upcoming election on Saturday, Obi stressed the importance of collective involvement in the nation’s rebuilding efforts.
He urged voters in the state to resist the temptation to sell their votes or compromise their principles for any incentives.
“We recognize that democracy is under strain in Nigeria; it has been reduced to transitional politics. However, we must persist in our campaign and remind Nigerians that it is time to start constructing a new Nigeria.
“A Nigeria where anyone, regardless of their background, can achieve greatness; a Nigeria that offers equal opportunities; a Nigeria that actively works to eradicate poverty, ensuring our children receive an education and our healthcare systems function effectively.”
Sola Ebisen, the LP’s governorship candidate for Ondo State, asserted that the Labour Party is the sole political entity capable of transforming the state.
“Our initiatives, policies, and projects are evident throughout the state, and you can see them everywhere. Wherever you go in Ondo State, you will find projects that reflect the vision I represent. Our presidential candidate is here to lend support and demonstrate that the Labour Party is the right choice for voters.”
