The presidential candidate of the Labour Party during the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has responded to the recent conclusion of the #EndBadGovernance protests that took place nationwide from August 1st to August 10th.
In a statement shared across social media platforms, Obi expressed his profound condolences to the families mourning the loss of loved ones during the demonstrations, which tragically included both protesters and security personnel. He also extended his sympathies to those injured and currently recuperating in medical facilities and at home.
“Now that the #EndBadGovernance protests have officially ended, I want to once again express my deepest sympathies to all who have lost their lives, including our brave security forces,” Obi remarked.
“These individuals sacrificed their lives in the pursuit of improved governance for our nation. To the families affected by this struggle, we share in your sorrow as we strive collectively for a better Nigeria.”
He continued, “May we all gather the strength to cope with such irreplaceable losses. To the injured individuals recovering in hospitals and at home, please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you as you heal. Your contributions to our nation’s cause are profoundly valued.”
The former Governor of Anambra State also urged national leaders to acknowledge their responsibilities and address the pressing concerns of the Nigerian populace.
“I urge all leaders to heed the cries of the suffering citizens and respond to their legitimate demands,” Obi stated. “It is essential for us, as leaders, to tackle the issues that sparked these protests urgently.”
He highlighted the critical need to confront challenges such as insecurity, corruption, economic hardship, and poverty, emphasizing that these matters require immediate and decisive action.
“May those who have passed rest in peace, and may the injured experience a swift and full recovery,” he added.
In a related context, President Tinubu addressed the nation last Sunday following the demonstrations, urging citizens to remain calm.
However, his refusal to reconsider the subsidy removal has drawn significant backlash, with many, including the protesters, expressing disappointment that his address focused more on his accomplishments rather than providing concrete solutions to the issues raised.
