Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, has confirmed his role as one of the two guarantors for the bail of human rights activist Dele Farotimi, who was granted bail by the Ado Ekiti Magistrate Court.
Obi expressed his discontent with Nigeria’s legal system, particularly regarding the imprisonment of individuals over minor offenses, such as the alleged theft of a chicken. He also praised Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke for his prompt action in addressing the situation.
In a post by Dr. Tanko Yunusa, the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, it was revealed, “I consulted with HE Peter Obi, as the leader of the Obidient Movement. As a staunch advocate for the rule of law and due process, he agreed to assist Dele Farotimi under the bail conditions.”
Obi expressed gratitude toward the courts and all parties involved in the matter. “His primary concern is to ensure that this situation is resolved in a manner that serves the best interests of everyone involved, as well as our legal system. He extended his heartfelt thanks to all who contributed,” Yunusa stated.
Yunusa mentioned that while all necessary bail documents may not have been finalized immediately, as the bail was granted on a Friday, he remains hopeful that all conditions will be completed by Monday.
