In a surprising turn of events, the police arrested a young man and his fiancée this evening on the Abeokuta-Ibadan expressway for their alleged involvement in a car theft operation.
The arrest took place after a tip-off led authorities to the couple, who were intercepted while driving a stolen vehicle.
According to the police, the man, identified as Olaina Abioye, 29, had been involved in a series of car thefts across the region. His fiancée, Banke Adio, 27, was reportedly unaware of her partner’s criminal activities and was shocked to learn of his involvement when they were apprehended.
Police sources revealed that Olaina had been on their radar for some time, following reports of stolen vehicles in the area. The couple was intercepted along the expressway, driving a Toyota Camry that had been reported stolen just hours earlier in Abeokuta.
During questioning, Banke expressed disbelief and insisted she had no knowledge of her fiancé’s illicit activities. She claimed they were on their way to visit relatives in Ibadan when they were stopped by the police.
The arrest has sparked discussions in the local community, with many expressing concern over the rise in car thefts along the expressway. The police have assured the public that they are intensifying efforts to curb such criminal activities and have urged citizens to remain vigilant.
Both Olaina and Banke are currently in police custody and are expected to be charged in court once investigations are complete. The authorities are also investigating whether Olaina had any accomplices involved in the car theft operations.
