The situation in Kano has intensified as the Kano State Police Command recently reinforced security measures around the palaces of the contending emirs. Reports indicate that additional armed personnel have been stationed at both the Kofar Kudu Palace, where Emir Malam Mohammad Sanusi resides, and the Nasarawa Mimi Palace, home to Emir Aminu Bayero. This move follows the withdrawal of local hunters who had previously guarded these premises.
Usaini Gumel, the outgoing Commissioner of Police and also an Assistant Inspector General of Police, confirmed the heightened deployment in a recent interview. Stressing the importance of these measures, he stated, “We have deployed equipped and armed personnel to these locations to ensure readiness in handling any unforeseen circumstances.”
Gumel emphasized that the primary goal of the increased security presence is to maintain peace and foster harmonious coexistence within the state. He urged the public to cooperate with law enforcement by providing crucial information that could contribute to maintaining stability. “We appeal to residents to support our efforts and share any information that could assist in preserving peace, progress, and political stability,” Gumel expressed.
Assuring the populace of the command’s unwavering commitment to their safety, Gumel reiterated, “Our priority is to provide the necessary security that allows all residents to carry out their daily activities without fear for their lives or property.”
The deployment of additional security forces comes amidst heightened tensions in Kano, sparked by the ongoing dispute over the emirship, underscoring the need for vigilant measures to ensure the safety and well-being of all citizens.
