In Asaba, a Delta State High Court has handed down a death sentence to Police Inspector Ubi Ebri for the murder of Mr. Ibeh Onyeka, a telephone repairer and seller, on April 5, 2023.
The incident occurred during a routine stop and search along the Ugbolu Asaba Road in the state capital, sparking city-wide protests by outraged youths.
The prosecution, headed by E.H Edema, a Director in the Ministry of Justice, claimed that the defendant was a member of the Police Patrol team conducting the stop and search operation.
According to reports, the victim and his wife were traveling from Ugbolu to Asaba when they were stopped by the police for inspection. Allegedly, the defendant fired shots at the vehicle, resulting in the death of the victim, who was struck in the head by bullets.
Despite sitting in the front seat with her husband, the wife of the deceased escaped unharmed. Presided over by Justice C.D. Diai, the court convicted the defendant and subsequently handed down a death sentence.
It was recalled by Daily Post that the death of the individual sparked protests among the town’s youth.
The deceased’s elder brother, Fidel Ifeanyi Ibeh who observed the verdict, praised the court for providing justice to his family.
