A policeman shot a 40-year-old man called Benalayefa Asiayei for refusing to give him N200 when demanded along Azikoro Road.
The driver, Asiayei, was reportedly coming from work in his Toyota Sienna at 8 p.m. on Tuesday when he was shot by a police officer.
When approached about the event, Musa Mohammed, the state Police Public Relations Officer, stated that the officer responsible is a member of the state security group Operation Doo Akpo.
The deceased, an electrician from the Bobougbene village in Delta State’s Burutu Local Government Area, was driving with a passenger in the front seat at the time of the event.
According to an eyewitness, the Operation Doo Akpo patrol stopped him and requested N200 as their customary collection package from motorists, which he said he did not have.
According to an eyewitness, Asiayei claimed that he was only transporting one passenger when the policeman opened fire on him.
It was also discovered that the deceased’s in-law, simply known as Zaiky, spotted the car and corpse, rang the alarm, and one of the cops pointed at the officer who shot him.
The police officer allegedly fled in the patrol van, but several witnesses had already captured images of him.
The corpse was transported by police to Government House Hospital in Yenagoa and then to the Federal Medical Centre’s morgue.
Meanwhile, the family seeks justice, pushing Governor Douye Diri, the Inspector General of Police, and the Ijaw Youth Council to take action against police violence in the state.
“We are calling on the Executive Governor of Bayelsa State, Sen. Douye Diri and the Inspector General of Police in a matter of urgency, to bring to book, the policeman who shot Bena to death, face the law, and also calling on Ijaw Youth Council IYC Worldwide to take necessary action against police brutality in Bayelsa State,” the family stated.
