Controversial Nigerian artist, Habeeb Okikiola, widely known as Portable, has stirred up controversy by publicly calling out fellow musician Davido for what he perceives as misleading advice given during a recent encounter in the United States.

During an Instagram Live session, Portable disclosed that Davido, who himself is affiliated with Sony Music, advised him against pursuing a contract with the label, instead suggesting that he opt for Empire. This counsel, according to Portable, came despite both artists sharing ambitions of achieving a Grammy Award.

Expressing his frustration and disbelief, Portable stated, “You are signed to Sony Music, but you’re giving me bad advice in America to get signed to Empire and collect advance. The same Grammy you’re chasing is what I’m also chasing.” This revelation underscores Portable’s belief that Davido’s advice may not align with his career aspirations, potentially hindering his path to international recognition.

Furthermore, Portable emphasized the importance of receiving genuine support from mentors and colleagues in the industry. He praised the likes of Olamide and Skepta for their direct assistance and mentorship, contrasting them favorably with those who he feels may offer superficial or misguided guidance.

“I appreciate helpers like Olamide and Skepta, who have supported me not just with resources but also with valuable connections to major fashion brands,” Portable remarked, highlighting his preference for mentors who demonstrate a sincere commitment to his career growth.

The incident has sparked discussions among fans and industry insiders alike, with many speculating on the dynamics of mentorship and advice-sharing within the Nigerian music scene. Portable’s candid remarks have added another layer to ongoing conversations about the complexities of navigating the music industry, particularly for emerging artists aiming to make strategic career decisions.
