Tragedy struck in Osogbo today, May 30, 2024, as a pregnant woman reportedly collapsed due to severe hunger. The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning at Oja Oba market.
Eyewitnesses reported that the woman, identified as Mrs. Adebayo, was on her way home when she suddenly slumped. Bystanders rushed to her aid and attempted to revive her, but she remained unresponsive. She was immediately transported to a nearby hospital where medical personnel confirmed that she had fainted due to acute malnutrition.
Dr. Akinbisi, a physician at the hospital, stated that Mrs. Adebayo, who is six months pregnant, had not eaten for several days. “The patient is suffering from severe malnutrition and dehydration. Her condition is as a result of the food insecurity plaguing many families in the region,” Dr. Adebisi said.
Local residents expressed their concern and frustration over the rising levels of poverty and hunger in the country. “It is heartbreaking to see a pregnant woman collapse because she has not had enough to eat. This situation is alarming, and we need urgent intervention from the government and non-governmental organizations,” said Mrs. Olabanjo, a market vendor.
Authorities have yet to release an official statement regarding the incident. However, community leaders are calling for immediate action to address the hunger crisis. They are urging the state government to implement emergency food relief programs to support vulnerable populations, especially pregnant women and children.
Mrs. Adebayo’s condition is currently stable, but doctors have emphasized the need for proper nutrition to ensure the health and safety of both her and her unborn child. The community is rallying around her, providing food and support, but there are calls for long-term solutions to prevent similar incidents in the future.
