Vice-President Kashim Shettima declared on Saturday that the President has never employed official tools to harass or torment those who are seen to be adversaries.

Shettima made this statement in Ilorin at a speech commemorating Prof. Yusuf Ali’s Ghalib Chambers’ 30th anniversary.

She said this to justify President Tinubu’s decision to forego the election process.

He claimed that Tinubu’s views on fairness, fair play, and political freedom were the reason for this.

“We (at the Presidency) never used instruments of office to haunt or hound perceived opponents, and President Tinubu never influenced the electoral process,” the Vice-President declared.

Shettima asserted that adherence to the rule of law and effective governance are the only things that can sustain democracy, not the form of government.

The guest speaker for the event, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, pointed out that there was a call in some quarters for the reintroduction of the parliamentary system of government, but he advised those in favor of it to carefully consider their options.

“They should reflect on whether the reasons which caused its collapse in the First Republic had been sorted out or not,” Fashola said.

“Nigeria once practised this parliamentary system, but it failed and led the country into unwarranted disaster.

Let us think deeply on why the parliamentary system failed us and ask ourselves if we have overcome those reasons,” Fashola said.

Rather than advocating for a change in the political system, the guest speaker proposed liberal democracy as a means of ensuring a higher and improved standard of living for Nigerians.

Yusuf Ali, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), was praised by Fashola for his significant contribution to the country’s legal system.

Previously, Ali, the founder of Ghalib Chambers, expressed his thanks and humility to Almighty Allah, the Creator and Divine Architect, stating, “My heart is full of gratitude, humility and deepest appreciation to Almighty Allah for all that I have accomplished.

“When I think back on the trip, I am reminded of all the times Allah helped, led, and blessed me—even in the darkest moments.

Ali expressed gratitude to his late wife, siblings, children, instructors, parents, and clients who, in whatever situation, shared their knowledge and experience with him.
