Nigerian President Senator Bola Tinubu has expressed his appreciation for the media’s significant role in the 25-year journey towards maintaining uninterrupted democracy, emphasizing that their unwavering commitment to nation-building deserves acknowledgment from all citizens.
In a speech delivered by the Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, Tinubu highlighted that the democracy enjoyed in Nigeria today owes much to the media’s steadfast support.
He extended his gratitude to media professionals, recognizing their combined efforts not only in the past but also in the present, as the nation celebrates a quarter-century of democratic governance.
During the opening ceremony of the All Nigerian Editors Conference (ANEC) held in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, Tinubu, who has been an active participant in the pro-democracy movement, reiterated the indispensable role of the media in that struggle.
“Within this gathering are numerous veteran journalists who were instrumental in ushering Nigeria into an era of lasting democracy. I honor your individual and collective contributions as we commemorate 25 years of continuous democratic experience,” he remarked.
The President emphasized the interconnectedness of the government and the media in any thriving democracy, stating that both are essential in serving the public interest. He noted, “The media has a responsibility to hold elected and appointed officials accountable, ensuring that we are fortifying democracy rather than undermining it. This vital work should be conducted with mutual respect and collaboration, not conflict and opposition. Such cooperation allows us to achieve common objectives that benefit society as a whole.”
He further asserted, “Our effectiveness is maximized when we work together rather than against one another. By viewing each other as partners in nation-building, we create a space where transparency, accountability, and mutual respect can flourish. Together, the government and the media can empower citizens, enhance democratic institutions, and cultivate a more informed and resilient populace.”
As the conference focused on the timely theme of “Economic Growth and Development Strategies in a Resource-Rich Country,” Tinubu remarked that Nigeria stands at a crucial juncture in its pursuit of sustainable growth and prosperity.
On the topic of economic reforms, the President revealed that his administration has successfully lowered the nation’s debt service-to-revenue ratio from 100% to 65% over the past 18 months through ongoing reforms, laying the groundwork for economic recovery.
He concluded by stating that his administration is committed to establishing a compelling vision for a prosperous Nigeria, aiming to restore the faith and hope of all Nigerians in the nation’s potential for success and to create an environment in which everyone can thrive.
