President Bola Tinubu has called on stakeholders to champion the rights and voices of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in order to foster inclusion and enhance their welfare.
This appeal was made during a national dialogue held in Abuja on Tuesday, in recognition of the 2024 International Day for Persons with Disabilities.
President Tinubu underscored the necessity of advancing the rights of PWDs in Nigeria, referencing the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, which underscores the protection of these individuals.
“While the charter may not specifically cite Article 18, Sub 4, it underscores the importance of safeguarding and promoting the rights of all, including those with disabilities,” he stated.
As part of the Renewed Hope Agenda, the President shared that a special assistant has been appointed to advocate for equal opportunities for PWDs. This office is tasked with collaborating with governmental bodies, civil society groups, and organizations representing PWDs.
“We are actively partnering with the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities to further the cause of inclusion within our nation,” he added.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio, represented by Senator Ireti Kingibe of the FCT, assured attendees that the tenth Senate would persist in legislating for the rights and well-being of PWDs. He highlighted the necessity for a unified approach to ensure inclusive development for PWDs.
Mr. Akpabio emphasized the need to assess individuals based on their capabilities rather than their disabilities. He articulated that democracy extends beyond the right to vote; it encompasses equal opportunities for everyone, including those with disabilities.
To realize this vision, he called for solidarity and a collective commitment to fostering inclusivity, hope, and determination in advancing the rights and inclusion of PWDs.
