President Bola Tinubu has opted to skip this year’s 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session in New York. Instead, he has appointed Vice President Kashim Shettima to spearhead Nigeria’s delegation.

Having recently returned to Nigeria from trips to China and the United Kingdom, President Tinubu has chosen to concentrate on pressing domestic matters, particularly in light of the severe flooding that has impacted the nation.

Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, announced in a statement that Vice President Shettima will present Nigeria’s national address at the General Assembly, engage in significant sideline events, and participate in bilateral discussions.

The high-level General Debate, which centers on the theme “Leaving no one behind: Acting together for the advancement of peace, sustainable development and human dignity for present and future generations,” is scheduled to take place from Tuesday, September 24, to Saturday, September 28, 2024.
