President Bola Tinubu has applauded the recent decision by the Supreme Court of Nigeria, which solidifies the constitutional rights and autonomy of local governments. The ruling marks a significant milestone in the country’s pursuit of effective governance at the grassroots level.

In his statement, President Tinubu acknowledges the historical challenge of ineffective local government administration, emphasizing the need for local council leaders to prioritize people-oriented service delivery.

He highlighted the importance of ensuring that all Nigerians, regardless of their background, benefit from the resources and services provided by their local governments.

“The Renewed Hope Agenda is centered around the people of our great nation, transcending divisions of faith, tribe, gender, or political affiliation.

This judgment empowers our citizens, particularly the underprivileged, to hold their local leaders accountable for their actions.

The allocation of funds to local government accounts will now be transparent, and services must be delivered without excuses,” asserts President Tinubu.

The president further explains that his administration pursued this legal action because of their unwavering belief in the necessity of empowering the people.

He sees this ruling as a resounding affirmation that legitimate means can be used to reshape the country and create a fairer society for all Nigerians.

President Tinubu acknowledged the decline in the provision of essential amenities and public goods, such as infrastructure maintenance and community security, due to the weakening of local governments.

He believes that the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the financial autonomy and principles of local governments is a crucial step towards strengthening Nigeria’s federal structure and fostering nationwide development.

Commending the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), for his dedication to this important task, President Tinubu reiterates his administration’s commitment to protecting the principles outlined in the constitution.

He emphasized the need for an efficient and performance-driven governance system that works for the betterment of every Nigerian.
