President Bola Tinubu is scheduled to leave Abuja for Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Sunday to participate in the 19th G20 Leaders’ Summit taking place in the South American nation.
According to a statement from Bayo Onanuga, the president’s spokesperson, Tinubu’s attendance is at the invitation of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, the Brazilian president and current chair of the group.
The summit, which will run from November 18 to 19, is expected to gather leaders from the world’s top 20 economies, along with representatives from the European Union, the African Union, and various multilateral financial institutions.
This year’s gathering will focus on the theme “Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet,” where discussions will center around combating hunger and poverty, reforming global governance institutions, sustainable development, and transitioning to cleaner energy.
“Nigeria has consistently advocated for reforms within global governing bodies and has positioned itself as a strong candidate for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council,” Mr. Onanuga noted.
Additionally, President Tinubu is anticipated to engage in bilateral discussions on the sidelines of the summit to further Nigeria’s socio-economic reforms.
He will be accompanied by several high-ranking government officials, including Yusuf Tuggar, the Minister of Foreign Affairs; Idi Mukhtar Maiha, the Minister of Livestock Development; and Hannatu Musawa, the Minister of Art, Tourism, Culture and Creativity.
Also joining the delegation are Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, and Mohammed Mohammed, the Director General of the National Intelligence Agency.
“Following the summit, the president will return to Nigeria,” Mr. Onanuga confirmed.
