The Minister of Education, Prof Tahir Mamman, has outlined the reasons behind the Federal Government’s decision to reverse the merger of technical and science colleges, stating that the merger undermined the original purpose of establishing technical colleges nationwide.

Speaking at a one-day stakeholders’ meeting addressing the challenges facing technical colleges, Prof. Mamman expressed dissatisfaction with the previous decision to merge technical colleges with science colleges.

He stressed that technical colleges should be dedicated solely to students with a keen interest in technical education.

The minister pointed out that students interested in science should attend regular science colleges to pursue their studies, emphasising that the merger was a mistake.

Prof. Mamman also lamented the low enrollment in technical colleges, highlighting the critical role these institutions play in imparting skills necessary for the country’s transformation.
