The Progressives Governors Forum has made a heartfelt plea to Nigerians to reconsider their plans for a nationwide protest against the government led by President Bola Tinubu, scheduled from August 1 to August 10.
This forum, which comprises members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), is dedicated to shaping policy recommendations and coordinating the initiatives of progressive governors to foster a socio-democratic environment.
Following a closed-door meeting with fellow governors in Abuja on Wednesday, the forum’s chairman, Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, expressed his concerns regarding the timing of such demonstrations. He emphasized that it would be unwise for any group to engage in protests during this critical period.
Uzodimma remarked that there seems to be external influences encouraging various groups to protest, stating, “We are unsure of the motives behind these demonstrations.”
He continued, “At this juncture, we believe it is imprudent for any group to stage demonstrations, regardless of their justification. Our focus should be on addressing pressing issues such as insecurity, the national minimum wage, food security, and the ongoing economic recession. We urge our youth to resist being provoked into creating turmoil in our nation.”
Highlighting the challenges Nigerians have faced, Uzodimma pointed to the global economic downturn, domestic insecurity, and political tensions exacerbated by opposition parties and negative social media campaigns against government policies. He called for a sense of national ownership, urging citizens to remember that Nigeria is the only home they have.
The governor extended an invitation to all stakeholders to engage in dialogue, suggesting that they come together to discuss the prevailing issues and collaboratively seek solutions. He affirmed the commitment of the forum to the unity of the nation and to initiatives that enhance the quality of life for all Nigerians, create job opportunities for graduates, and promote prosperity.
Uzodimma reiterated the progressives’ unwavering support for President Tinubu, stating, “We stand firmly behind our President and the policies he advocates, including his economic reforms.”
In conclusion, he asked Nigerians for patience as the government works diligently to alleviate the economic hardships currently afflicting the country.
