The Muslim community is mourning the loss of one of its most esteemed figures, Alhaji Muyideen Bello, who passed away at the age of 84.
Born in 1940 in Ibadan, Alhaji Bello was celebrated for his eloquence, vast knowledge of Islamic teachings, and his lifelong dedication to peace and unity. His profound influence extended across generations, shaping countless lives through his wisdom and spiritual leadership.
From a young age, Bello’s passion for Islamic scholarship was evident. At nine, he moved to live with his uncle, an Islamic scholar in Ibadan, to deepen his understanding of the Quran. Despite his religious commitments, he pursued formal education, earning a National Certificate of Education (NCE) and briefly working in electronics before dedicating his life to Islamic preaching.
Known for his fearless sermons, Bello often emphasized truth and integrity. “From my childhood, I was noted for saying the truth no matter whose ox is gored. It is with utmost truth that we should speak God’s words every day,” he once remarked.
The news of Alhaji Bello’s passing was announced on Friday morning by Alfa Aribidesi of At-Tawdeeh Islamic Da’awah. The cleric’s death was also confirmed by Sheikh Taofeeq Akeugbagold, who described Bello as his “father and mentor.”
In a heartfelt post, Sheikh Akeugbagold wrote:
“Today is one of my saddest days! My father and mentor has returned to his Creator. SULTONUL WAHIZEEN of Yorubaland Sheikh Muyideen AJANI BELLO, may Allah be pleased with your soul. Aljannah Firdaus for you. Our heart is full of grief and our eyes full of tears, but we will say nothing but what pleases our Creator.”
Another follower and Islamic singer, Alhaji Basit Olarenwaju (popularly known as Aponle Anabi), shared a photo of Bello on Facebook with tearful emojis, expressing his grief.
Since the announcement, mourners have gathered at Bello’s Akobo residence in Ibadan to console his family and pay their respects. The atmosphere has been described as one of grief and gratitude, with many recalling his relentless advocacy for unity and enlightenment.
While official details of the funeral have not been disclosed, reports suggest that Bello will be buried according to Islamic rites on Friday evening.
Alhaji Muyideen Bello’s journey into public speaking began at the tender age of 10. His deep-rooted passion for education and Islamic teachings set him apart from many of his contemporaries. His ability to combine formal education with traditional Islamic scholarship earned him widespread respect.
Reflecting on his career, Bello once stated:
“Even at that time, I knew I would one day become an Islamic cleric. But I also wanted to make sure that I have a job that would put food on my table.”
His teachings, described as fearless and truthful, left an indelible mark on the Muslim Ummah in Nigeria and beyond.
The passing of Alhaji Muyideen Bello marks the end of an era, but his legacy of knowledge, faith, and unity will endure for generations to come.
