The House of Representatives has approved the Nigerian Shipping and Port Economic Regulatory Agency Bill, as announced by Barrister Pius Akutah, Executive Secretary/CEO of the Nigerian Shippers Council, on Friday.

Speaking at the 2024 Operational Retreat for middle management officers in Lagos, Barrister Akutah revealed that the Bill is now under consideration by the Senate.

He urged attendees to view the training as an opportunity to enhance their skills for the new responsibilities the Council is undertaking.

“This training targets middle management officers at grade levels 12 to 14. As you prepare for future top management roles, remember that middle management is crucial for policy implementation,” Barrister Akutah stated.

He highlighted that the House of Representatives’ passage of the Bill is a significant step forward. “The Senate was set to review the Bill this past Tuesday, but due to the supplementary budget discussions, it was postponed.

The Senate has completed the first reading, and we anticipate the Bill will be passed into law once they return from recess,” he said.

Barrister Akutah also conveyed the appreciation of the Honourable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, who has been a strong supporter of the Council’s efforts.

The Minister is committed to advancing the Blue Economy sector, aligning with President’s vision for it to contribute significantly to the national GDP.

“The Nigerian Shippers Council plays a vital role in advancing this sector and, once the law is enacted, we will have the authority to enforce regulations effectively. We count on each of you to drive the Council’s mission forward,” he added.
