The 1974 to 1979 alumni of the Nigerian Military School in Zaria have announced plans to build an ultra-modern library at their alma mater. This initiative was revealed by Retired Colonel Alphonsus Odu during the cohort’s 50-year Golden Jubilee celebration held in Abuja. Odu emphasized that the library donation reflects their commitment to enhancing education, stating that improving schools should not solely rely on government efforts.
During the event, Odu reminisced about the day in 1974 when 125 boys from various backgrounds began their secondary education at the Nigerian Military School, which combined academic studies with military training. He noted the cohort has lost about 37 members over the years, leaving 88 still alive.
Retired Major General Chris Olukolade, another alumnus, highlighted the diverse professional backgrounds of the cohort, which includes experts in fields such as medicine, engineering, law, and politics. He expressed that the alumni would use their skills and knowledge to tackle current security and developmental challenges in Nigeria.
A guest speaker, Professor Chukwuemeka Asonye from the University of Benin, urged attendees to prioritize regular health check-ups, particularly for age-related issues like eyesight problems, which are common among older individuals.
The alumni’s commitment to education and community service reflects a broader dedication to fostering positive change in Nigerian society. The planned library will serve as a valuable resource for future generations of students at the Nigerian Military School, reinforcing the importance of education in shaping the nation’s future.
