Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has issued a cautionary statement to the state’s police commissioner, Olatunji Disu, and other officers, urging them to refrain from neglecting their essential duties in favor of personal political ambitions. He warned that such behavior could have detrimental consequences in the future.

This announcement was made during the inauguration and official handover of 100 new operational vehicles provided by his administration to the Rivers State Police Command at the Sharks Football Stadium in Port Harcourt on Tuesday.

Governor Fubara emphasized that police officers are trained professionals tasked with ensuring the safety and security of citizens while fostering peace within the state as a civic responsibility.

He stated, “I want to clarify this for your understanding. When you (Disu) arrived in Rivers State and we first met, I made one request: I will never instruct you to do anything unethical. So, please act correctly. Safeguard the lives and property of the people of Rivers. Avoid partisanship.”

The governor reflected on past experiences, saying, “We have observed the fates of those who chose partisanship; I urge every officer involved in such behavior to reconsider, as it could lead to unfavorable outcomes for you.”

He continued, “Strive to ensure that when your name is spoken in this state, or when your children visit, they won’t feel anxious. This is crucial.”

Governor Fubara also remarked, “Your role is not to protect individuals or to take sides in the state’s political landscape. Politics is transient; however, the animosity you foster through partisanship will have lasting repercussions.”

He reiterated, “I have previously stated this, and I will say it again: I will never instruct any of you to act improperly. My plea is for you to adhere to the ethical standards of your profession and to safeguard the lives and property of Rivers citizens. Be impartial.”

The governor commended the police commissioner for his initiative in acquiring operational vehicles for the police force. He noted that these vehicles, including models like Toyota Sienna, Camry, and Corolla, are intended to improve response times to incidents and assist the police in their responsibilities.

Commissioner Disu expressed appreciation to Governor Fubara for his backing, which he stated has enhanced the Command’s commitment to serving the welfare of local communities. He remarked that the new vehicles will empower officers to respond more efficiently to emergencies and bolster community policing initiatives.

It is worth noting that the governor is currently engaged in a political struggle with his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, over alleged control of state resources.
