This decision came following an application by a prominent kingmaker, Alhaji Aminu Babba Dan Agundi, who holds the title of Sarkin Dawaki Babba of the Kano Emirate. The ruling, delivered by Justice Mohammed Liman, marks a significant milestone in the ongoing legal battle surrounding the controversial law.
Alhaji Aminu Babba Dan Agundi, a respected member of the Danagundi family and a senior council member and kingmaker, sought the court’ s intervention to challenge the legality of the law passed by the Kano State Government.
The respondents in the fundamental rights suit include various key entities such as the Kano State Government, House of Assembly, the Speaker, the Attorney- General, Commissioner of Police, Inspector- General of Police (IGP), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and the State Security Service (SSS).
Justice Liman’ s ruling emphasized the need to maintain the status quo ante, meaning the previous state of affairs, before the passage and assent of the bill into law. He directed all parties to maintain this status pending the hearing of the fundamental rights application scheduled for the 3rd of June, 2024.
