The Senate has announced intentions to amend the 1999 constitution to facilitate the execution of the Supreme Court’s decision regarding local government autonomy.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio made this declaration on Thursday during a meeting with members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from Akwa Ibom State, who remain loyal to former Interim National Secretary Senator John James Akpanudoedehe, in Uyo.

According to a statement released by Jackson Udom, Special Assistant on Media to the Senate President, Akpabio expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his efforts to secure vital autonomy for local governments through the Supreme Court’s intervention.

“The Senate, under my guidance, will work on constitutional adjustments to guarantee that the Supreme Court’s ruling is implemented thoroughly, without any possibilities for manipulation by those involved,” Akpabio stated.

It’s worth noting that the former APC secretary switched allegiance to the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) after facing defeat in party leadership.

Reflecting on the return of party members, Akpabio remarked, “Change is the only constant in life. When I joined the APC, the party had not won a single councilorship seat in the state, and I was viewed as an adversary by the party’s then-leaders.

“During the 2019 elections, there were forces working against the APC. We had a prime opportunity to win governorship and other positions in the state, but the prior leadership failed to recognize it.

“I became part of the APC to connect with the central government, and I am grateful that this aspiration materialized in 2023. Today, by the grace of God and the support of President Bola Tinubu, I stand as the President of the Senate.

“God has elevated me to this role because He knows my intentions for our people are genuine. When you uplift others, your hands remain raised; when you bring them down, your hands will lower as well. So, follow those who know the way.”

“On behalf of the party leadership, I extend a warm welcome back to you all. I am pleased to see your return to the party where you rightfully belong. May God bless you and fulfill your progressive aspirations,” he concluded with a prayer.

Speaking for the returning members, Eteubong Alex Umoh, Obong Kufre Akpan, and Mrs. Roseline Eyang asserted, “We never left the APC, even when our leader departed. We remained loyal because we recognize you as our leader in the state.

“We refuse to be pawns in any conflict against you or the party leadership. We are delighted to be gathered here today. There is no division within the APC; we are now a united family.”
