Senate President Goodwill Akpabio has reaffirmed the federal government’s dedication to the welfare of military personnel, emphasizing ongoing support during a recent event in Abuja.
During the inauguration of the revamped Officers’ Mess at the National Defence College, which coincided with the graduation of Course 32, Akpabio highlighted the government’s continuous backing for the armed forces under President Bola Tinubu’s administration. He noted that the renovation of the mess stands as a testament to this commitment.
Akpabio also assured attendees that the government is devoted to completing the college’s permanent site at Piweyi on schedule, promising that adequate funding would be allocated in the 2025 budget for the project.
“We firmly believe this initiative will boost our officers’ morale, offering them a comfortable space to relax, reflect, and engage in critical strategic discussions vital for global security, extending beyond Nigeria,” he stated.
He emphasized that the newly inaugurated facility represents more than just a physical structure; it serves as a refuge for those who have dedicated their lives to the service of humanity. This space will foster collaboration and friendships, ultimately enhancing the strength and resilience of the armed forces.
“The remodeling of the NDC officers’ mess marks a significant milestone, showcasing our shared responsibility to uplift one another and reinforce our commitment to national security,” he added.
Akpabio commended the commandant and staff of the college for their impressive strides in establishing the institution as a leading center for military education globally. He recognized the college’s historical significance, stating that it has long been a vital hub for camaraderie and strategic dialogue among military officers.
He emphasized that the project reflects their dedication to the principles of excellence, discipline, and service that define the institution.
“The National Defence College has been a beacon of leadership, nurturing officers who have served our nation, Africa, and the world with honor. Today marks a crucial step in preserving this legacy for future generations,” he remarked.
The Commandant of the College, Rear Admiral Olumuyiwa Olotu, expressed gratitude to Akpabio for his ongoing support and involvement in the college’s transformation, recalling that he provided initial funding for the mess during his tenure as governor of Akwa Ibom.
Olotu noted that the newly renovated mess is designed for the relaxation of college personnel, highlighting its role in supporting their well-being, allowing them to recharge for their essential duties.
“It’s vital to acknowledge the significant contributions of His Excellency, the Senate President, to this college and its facilities over the years. Without his efforts, this mess would not have been established,” he concluded.
