Senate President Godswill Akpabio has assured that the National Assembly will fully support President Bola Tinubu’s initiative to establish a Special Disaster Intervention Fund.

In a remarkable move, President Tinubu made an unexpected return from his trip to New York to visit Maiduguri on Monday, where he expressed condolences to the local government and citizens affected by the devastating floods and the damage to the Alau Dam.

In response, Akpabio praised Tinubu’s proactive approach to the flooding crisis and committed to backing his efforts.

This promise was made during the President’s condolence visit to Borno State and to the Shehu of Borno, Abubakar Ibn Umar Garba Al Amin El-Kanemi, at the Government House in Maiduguri. The assurance was communicated through a statement by his special adviser on media and publicity, Hon. Eseme Eyiboh.

As chairman of the National Assembly, Akpabio emphasized that the parliament is prepared to mobilize necessary resources to bolster the Federal Government’s initiatives aimed at disaster mitigation and prevention.

“This reflects our dedication to the safety and well-being of all Nigerians,” Akpabio remarked.

He reassured the President of the National Assembly’s determination to collaborate with the Executive branch, stating, “Upon reconvening, we will work to reinforce the intervention fund and support the efforts of the Federal Government, state authorities, NNPCL, NEMA, and other agencies involved in disaster response.”

Additionally, Senator Akpabio expressed his intent to enhance the Special Disaster Intervention Fund once it is established and offered gratitude to President Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, NNPCL, NEMA, the Armed Forces, and other partners for their rapid and effective responses to the flood crisis.

He concluded, “The National Assembly is devoted to supporting all governmental efforts, both federal and state, that aim to restore hope to Nigerians. The President’s plan to create a Special Disaster Intervention Fund from FAAC allocations for future natural disasters showcases a steadfast commitment to effective governance and transformative leadership.”
