On Wednesday, Senate President Godswill Akpabio officially announced the vacancy of Senator Monday Okpebholo’s seat, which represents the Edo Central Senatorial District. This decision follows Okpebholo’s recent election as the Governor of Edo State.
In his address, Akpabio urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to promptly organize elections to fill the vacant position, ensuring continued representation for the people of Edo Central in the Senate.
The announcement came after a farewell session held in honor of Okpebholo by the Senate. During this session, Akpabio encouraged Okpebholo to maintain his legacy of positive contributions as he transitions into his role as governor.
“This moment is quite emotional for me,” Akpabio remarked. “Since joining the 10th Senate in June 2023, every moment spent in the red chamber has been particularly significant.”
He reflected on the senators’ shared commitment to democracy and their aspirations for the nation. “Just under a year in the Senate, I left to chase my dream of becoming governor. Today, I stand here as the Governor of Edo State.”
He acknowledged the vital role his fellow senators played in his journey, emphasizing the invaluable support, guidance, and prayers he received.
“I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the exceptional Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, for his unwavering support during my campaign. To my Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, your wise counsel has been a great asset. And to my Senate Majority Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, I appreciate your camaraderie and the invaluable discussions we shared.”
Okpebholo expressed that his experience in legislation has fueled his passion for governance, particularly in areas like infrastructure, security, education, and health, now in his capacity as governor.
“We achieved success together, and we should always take pride in one another,” he concluded, expressing gratitude to his close friends and colleagues in the Senate for their support.
