Senate President Godswill Akpabio has made clear the Senate’s dedication to promoting accountability, transparency, and effective governance across the nation.
Akpabio made this declaration during the commencement of a workshop titled “Strengthening Legislative Compliance for Effective Governance,” held for members of the Senate Committee on Legislative Compliance on Monday in Abuja.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), this workshop was organized by the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) in partnership with Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS).
As elected officials, Akpabio emphasized that their primary role is to ensure the successful implementation of the resolutions and laws enacted by the legislature. He highlighted that the Senate’s responsibilities extend beyond mere oversight; they must also translate the hopes and aspirations of Nigerians, as expressed through their representatives, into tangible actions and favorable results.
The Senate President underscored the importance of legislative compliance for effective governance, pointing out that without it, the National Assembly’s ability to function effectively would be compromised, public confidence in government would diminish, and development efforts would be hindered.
“As we engage in these discussions, I urge everyone to reflect on the wider implications of compliance for governance. When laws and resolutions are disregarded or inadequately executed, the very essence of democracy is jeopardized,” he stated.
“Thus, enhancing legislative compliance is not merely a procedural obligation; it is a patriotic responsibility that significantly affects the lives of Nigerians.”
Akpabio concluded by reaffirming the Senate’s commitment to fostering accountability, transparency, and good governance, stating, “We will persist in supporting initiatives that guarantee the effective implementation of laws and policies, in harmony with our legislative agenda and the aspirations of the Nigerian populace.”
