Senate President Godswill Akpabio has expressed that, despite facing threats from certain factions, senators are resolute in their intention to attend the funeral of their late colleague, Ifeanyi Ubah, in Nnewi, Anambra State.

This statement came amidst a wave of tributes from prominent political figures in Abuja on Monday, celebrating the legacy of Ubah.

Akpabio praised Senator Ubah for his unwavering dedication to the welfare of his constituents and his advocacy for the interests of the Igbo people. He also addressed the ongoing calls for the release of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, assuring that he would relay these concerns to the Federal Government and provide feedback to the Igbo community.

Furthermore, Akpabio highlighted Ubah’s significant contributions to the Senate, noting a lasting bond formed with Ubah’s family. He mentioned that the 10th Senate had successfully passed the Southeast Development Commission, a measure that aligned with Ubah’s persistent appeals for improved conditions for the Igbo people.

“Despite the threats, senators are committed to paying their respects to Ubah during his burial in Nnewi,” Akpabio stated.

“Ifeanyi Ubah was a voice for the marginalized people of Ndigbo. The passage of the Southeast Development Commission is a long-overdue step to address the devastation and aftermath of the civil war for our people. The Igbo community is resilient, proud, and fiercely independent.”

Former Imo State Governor Senator Rochas Okorocha added that granting the release of Nnamdi Kanu would be a fitting tribute to the late Ubah. He urged Senate President Akpabio and other influential leaders to facilitate Kanu’s release, enabling the Igbo people to return home.

Okorocha also encouraged the Igbo community to embrace peace, reflecting the values championed by Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, who had visited Kanu multiple times in prison to advocate for his release.
